Than you risk: six dangers of vegetarianism

If you are thinking about giving up meat and joining the ranks of vegetarians, you should get acquainted with the dangers that you may face.

Than you risk: six dangers of vegetarianism
Vegetarianism has many pluses and drawbacks. We decided to raise this topic on the World Day of giving up meat. 20th of March. Read, what you need to know the person who decided to become a vegetarian.

1. Lack of vitamin D

Yes, it can be replenished from plant sources and taking additional vitamins, but there is a kind of vitamin D (namely D3), which a person receives only from animal food. Being a vegetarian, it is important to replenish the calcium reserve in the body, as its lack, combined with a lack of vitamin D, can lead to fragility of bones.

2. Lack of zinc

The main sources of zinc are beef and lamb, so people who do not use these types of meat risk losing an important element responsible for the formation of the immune system. Those who still decided to give up meat can make up a reserve of zinc by eating sunflower seeds - they are the third product on the list containing this element.

3. Anemia (anemia)

Animal proteins are the main source of iron, which helps blood cells transport nutrients throughout the body. A low level of iron can lead to anemia (a decrease in hemoglobin concentration in the blood), which will lead to excessive fatigue and rapid heart rate.

Anemia is the most common problem among vegetarians. To raise the level of hemoglobin, it is recommended to eat more greens, seeds, soy and chocolate.

4. Anxiety

In 2012, scientists conducted a study in which 240 vegetarians and meat eaters took part. They noted that among vegetarians there are more people who suffer from mental imbalances. So, among vegetarians there were 31% of people who experienced anxiety disorder (compared to 13% of meat eaters).

5. Depression

The same study showed that vegetarians are more prone to depression compared to meat eaters. They were 14% more likely to suffer from a depressed state, which scientists explained by the lack of vitamin B12.

6. Eating disorder

Often, vegetarianism is just a cover for people who are panic-stricken to gain weight. Among them are often people who managed to lose weight (often with the help of fat-burning drugs), and in an attempt to save the result they switched to vegetarianism.

Another study showed that among people who have been treated for eating disorders, vegetarians are four times more likely. At the same time, about half of the people suffering from anorexia were fed only food of plant origin.
